scorching

In metal-working, the process of roughing out tools on a dry grindstone before they are hardened and tempered. It is so called from the great heat produced.

Burning; torrid; very hot.

Causing a sensation as of burning; stinging; hence, figuratively, bitterly sarcastic or upbraiding; caustic: scathing.

Fast riding on a bicycle or in a motor-car.

The injury caused to tender bark or leaves of plants by excessive heat of the sun. See firing, 7.
