naphthene

Any of several cycloalkane hydrocarbons having the general formula C_nH_2n and found in various petroleums.

In organic chemistry, a class-name of a series of hydrocarbons derived from hexahydrobenzene (cyclohexane), C₆H₁₂. Many of them may be made synthetically, and a considerable number are found in petroleum, especially in that from the Baku district.

A peculiar hydrocarbon fraction occuring as an ingredient of some crude petroleums, mostly mixtures of derivatives of the five- and six-membered saturated cyclic alkanes, cyclopentane and cyclohexane, having the general formula CnH2n.
