a South American hawk (Herpetotheres cachinnans); — so called from its notes, which resemble a shrill laugh.

hyponitrous oxide, or protoxide of nitrogen; — so called from the exhilaration and laughing which it sometimes produces when inhaled. It is much used as an anæsthetic agent.
