In the army of India, a native officer next in rank to a subadar, or captain of a, company of Sepoys; a lieutenant: the name is also applied, in the civil service, to certain officers of police, of the customs, etc., and, in large domestic establishments, to an overseer or head servant having general control of the others.

The chief or leader of a band or body of persons; esp., in the native army of India, an officer of a rank corresponding to that of lieutenant in the English army.
