mittimus

In old English law, a writ by which the sheriff of a county palatine was required to summon a jury from the county for the trial of a cause, the record of which was inclosed or sent (hence the name) with the writ.

In law:

A precept or command in writing, given by a justice of the peace or other proper officer, directed to the keeper of a prison, requiring him to receive and hold in safe-keeping an offender charged with a crime until he be delivered by due course of law; a warrant of commitment to prison.
