lectotype

A biological specimen or other element that is selected as the type specimen when a holotype was not originally designated.

In the nomenclature of types in natural history, a syntype selected subsequently to the original description, to take the place which in other cases is occupied by a holotype.

A biological specimen or illustration later selected to serve as definitive type example of a species or subspecies when the original author of the name did not designate a holotype.
