A sugarlike, edible substance obtained from the pupal case of any of several weevils of the genus Larinus of the Middle East.

A kind of manna excreted in Persia and Turkey by an insect, Larinus maculatus, in the form of cocoons, consisting chiefly of starch, sugar, and gum derived from the species of globe-thistle (Echinops Persica) on which it feeds. Also called Turkish manna.

An amorphous variety of manna obtained from the nests and cocoons of a Syrian coleopterous insect (Larinus maculatus, Larinus nidificans, etc.) which feeds on the foliage of a variety of thistle. It is used as an article of food, and is called also nest sugar.
