The checking of a stream current or the damming back of its waters by some temporary obstruction. The chief causes of natural ponding are faulting and differential elevation or warping of the strata, an effective dam often resulting from the folding or displacement.

The excessive accumulation of water at low-lying areas that remains after 48 hours after the end of rainfall under conditions conducive to drying.
